‘농담’이라. 어제는 장로의 암자에서 나보고 농담을 한다고 말하더니만. 그나저나, 얘야, 18세기에 어느 늙은 죄인이 있었는데, 신이 없다면 그것을 발명해 내야 한다는 말, 그러니까 신이 존재하지 않는다면 그것을 발명해 내야 한다 라는 말을 했다지. 그래서 인간은 정말로 신을 발명해 냈지. 그러니까 신이 정말로 존재한다는 건 이상할 것도, 놀라울 것도 없는 얘기이고, 오히려 정말 놀라운 것은 그런 생각이 ─ 그러니까 신이 반드시 필요하다는 생각이 ─ 인간과 같이 야만스럽고 사악한 동물의 머릿속에 떠오를 수 있었다는 사실인데, 이 생각은 그 정도로 성스럽고 그 정도로 감동적이고 그 정도로 현명하고 그 정도로 인간의 위신을 살려 준다는 거야. 나로 말할 것 같으면, 인간이 신을 창조했느냐, 아니면 신이 인간을 창조했느냐와 같은 문제는 이미 오래전부터 생각하지 않기로 했어.
